Colloquially known as the alligator pear, cultivated for nearly 10,000 years, and once reserved for royalty, avocados are nutritional delights.  One of my favorite foods! And luckily, they are also very nutritious!   Haas avocados are my favorite—they are creamier and have a better than average content of monounsaturated fat.  And if you haven’t heard, eating a diet rich in monounsaturated fat can equate to less fat on your body.

What are some of the foods containing monounsaturated fats that are getting all the attention?  Avocados for one, but you can also add olive oil, nuts, and even dark chocolate to get your daily dose.   I’ve talked about almonds and dark chocolate on my blog, but another way to feel full and fight fat is to add avocados to your diet.

One way that I like to add this wonder food into my diet is by including it in my daily Juicy Alligator blended shake—it’s so nutritious!

The monounsaturated fats in avocados also may help lower cholesterol…  They are a great source of potassium—which can help to regulate blood pressure.  Just one cup of avocados has nearly a quarter of the daily recommended value of folate. Recent research has shown that foods rich in monounsaturated fatty acids offer significant protection against breast cancer! A recent study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry suggests that avocados may inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells…

Plenty of reasons to pick up some avocados the next time you're at the grocery store...

The best part is that they are easy to eat. I like avacado in salads but cannot touch guacamole after experiencing a horrid case of Montezuma's revenge during a trip to Mexico. (I'm sorry if that's too much info but the trip was 6 years ago and I still skeeve guacamole, that's how bad it was!)

I so love this fruit and i can't get enough of this. I grew up with avocado in our front yard back home and i always climb on that tree to get as many as i want. And the avocado we have is so delicious and i just put some brown sugar in it and it's good to eat!

But you know what? Avocado is not good for sick people like those who have high blood pressure because avocado contains high cholesterol.

Hi Frogmama!

Montezuma's revenge--Geesh! I don't blame you for avoiding them... Happy Birthday!

Hi Utah Mommy!

Thanks for stoppin' in! It must be nice to be home--and I'm glad that you had a memorable vacation :)

I've never really liked avocado's - I don't know why, maybe it's just the way they were always 'served'...like guacamole...

But you've made them sound so yummy, I think I will have to try them again! :)

I have always loved avocados, but about a year ago my friend told me they were really high in BAD fat so I quit eating them. I found out about a month ago that they are actually good for you. Needless to say, my friend paid the price for that one. I eat guacamole by the ton.

Hi Stacy,

I think I just love all food--my biggest dilemma has always been what I should eat first! ;)

Hi Matt,

My dream is to have my own avocado tree (I already have my own lemon tree--that was first on my list...) I could eat avocados morning, noon, and night... YUM!

Oh Nicole, I had a total avocado disaster! I gained weight from them. They maybe good tasting and have good fat but too many will make you a**-vocado wider promise! LoL

*chuckle* REALLY!?! LOL... I haven't gained weight from them--and I'm definitely a regular eater--I think people are just put together differently and you have to find what works for you... I definitely wouldn't want an a**-vocado! ;)
