Waiting for Godot , (ehem…) I mean waiting for the doctor

I’ve spent a good amount of time loitering at the doctor’s office over the past three years; I’d say I’ve graduated to be expert “lingerer.”

Waiting-room-limbo
does have its perks-- I do get caught up on People, Time, Newsweek--the typical doctor's office magazines… I’ve also read all the brochures on Botox, prevention medicine, travel…

But today, I was ill prepared (oops), and I had Katie with me. It’s not good to dilly-dally with a three year old.

I really wish that they would tell you when you check in that it is going to be an hour or more—I could take a little walk, or well, somethin'... I can’t believe it took me two hours just for 8 minutes of the doctor’s time.

What do you think?
Is it alright to make patients wait for an hour and a half or even more for their appointment? They did call in advance and warn that I had to be 20 minutes early for my appointment—so I was on time… I was so close to leaving, but I knew that I’d have to reschedule somewhere else and then potentially have to wait that long again… Two hours? REALLY? Any fellow lobby-loiterers or doctors out there that want to weigh in?

Oh my gosh I think we have the same doctor! :o)
I wait at my doctors office so long some times I feel like I am loitering or am a borderline stalker! LoL

Nicole,
As someone who spent a good portion of their life in waiting rooms, (pharma rep), let me throw in my 2 cents. It's virtually impossible for a medical office to stay on schedule. And believe me, it's not the reps that are the problem! The best way to beat the system is to schedule your appointment as close to the beginning of hours as possible. Also, the first slot after lunch is good. It's still no guarantee, but it will give you a fighting chance. Specialty offices are usually the most punctual. Generalists are the worst. And if your doctor is solo rather than a group---take your laptop and a snack.

Great advice! I do usually schedule the early morning appointment whenever possible--but for some crazy reason I didn't do that today... It doesn't bother me until I'm into the second hour--then I get a little antsy... Good idea for the "after lunch" appointment--I'll try that!

I think it's just wrong that doctor's offices can hold you 'hostage' in the waiting room like that...there have been times that I've felt I've waited too long (I get impatient when I'm sitting there for an hour), I'll check with the desk and find out how much longer...usually then it's only another 10 minutes or so (the squeaky wheel and all that jazz).

There was one time I had the first appointment in the morning - and no one was even in the office yet! They were all about 1/2 hour late (no weather problems, so...not sure why) at least I got right in (1/2 hour late). But when I was ready to leave, I was told I had to wait for the 'check out' person first...I didn't have a co-pay that day, I didn't owe money from a previous visit, and I didn't have to have a prescription filled out because it was a follow-up visit from prior surgery... I was told I was just going to have to wait for her to get in - she was an hour late at that point - and the lady at the desk had no idea 'when' that person would be in. So I waited all of 10 minutes and just left (I had my daughter with me who was 4 at the time and really getting restless...and hungry! LOL!) I kept feeling like someone was going to run after me in the parking lot and 'make' me come back in to wait...LOL!!!

This absolutely steams me! I understand doctors are busy but come on, they shouldn't schedule so many dang appointments! An hour and a half is ridiculous. It's happened to me more than once and I always arrive early. Now I only make early morning appointments. Sorry to hear about your wait.

You are too patient. I would have left and switched doctors. That's just rude. And that's only happened to me once.

I think doctors do think of themselves a bit as Gods. And as a human God they can't be bothered to respect appointments.

I feel for you!

Doctors who consistently make people wait that long are demonstrating a concerning lack of attention to detail. If they are consistently scheduling less time than they require for appointments, it makes me wonder if they know what they are doing. Yes, sometimes things come up, but if a doctor is consistently more than half an hour late, it demonstrates an alarming level of incompetence.

I couldn't agree with you all more!

There is a certain level of respect that should be delivered to the patient--our time is valuable, too.

Having said that, I will likely continue to wait for my doctors as they become more and more lame with regard to timeliness... Aargh!

I agree with Anne and you Nicole. Scheduling needs to be realistic. If not, the doctor is either kidding himself or doesn't give a s**t about other people's time! And yes, G.P.'s do have emergencies, and sometimes things crop up to make them run behind, but not ALL THE TIME. Rant Over. Deep breath.

Hi Jan,

*chuckle* Thanks for your weigh in--I'm with you... I don't mind a wait once in a while--but if it's every time, well, then that just isn't right! I tend to be most flexible with the OBGYNs--babies and moms with babies tend to have issues that don't come nicely scheduled! Thanks for stopping by :)
